Negba : One of the key kibbutzim that stopped the advance of the Egyptian army in 1948, and then became a base from which it was defeated.

Inscription on the first photo.
Negba was one the kibbutzim collective settlements built during the Arab riots of 1936-39 as the constructive reply to Arab acts of destruction. It was, when established, the southernmost Jewish settlement in the country: hence its name, which means southwards towards the Negev. During the War of Independence, it was dominated by the Egyptian army, installed in the nearby fortified police post of Iraq Suweidan. The first major Egyptian attempt to destroy and capture Negba was carried out on 2nd June 1948, with an attack by tanks, guns and planes. The Jewish defenders were equipped only with small arms. One of the Egyptina tanks even penetrated the perimeter of the settlement. By holding their fire until the last moment, and then counter- attacking with vigour, the settlers drove off the Egyptians. They continued to come under regular Egyptian fire, and on 12th July 1948 the Egyptians again tried to take the kibbutz. They were again driven off, leaving 250 of their dead in 1000 yards of no-man's land between the aettlement and the police post.

The heroic stand of Negbah - the few against the many - became a symbol of the zealous defence by the Jewish farmer of the land on which he labours.
